http:\/\/www.westminsterkennelclub.org\/plan-your-visit\/tv-schedule\/<\/a><\/p>\nThe Labrador\u00a0Retriever that wins\u00a0the “Best of Breed” award\u00a0will vie for the Sporting Group\u00a0title against other sub-category winners. Seven Best of\u00a0Group winners later will compete for the overall title of Best in Show. According to the American Kennel Club,\u00a0competition events are intended to evaluate breeding stock. To be eligible, a canine must be registered with the club, be age six months or older, be a breed for which classes are offered at the given show, and meet other requirements specific to its breed.<\/p>\n
Dogs compete for points toward their AKC championship. Judges award points after examining a dog\u2019s teeth, muscle, bones, coat texture and profile for overall balance, according to the AKC. Contestants also are judged on their gait.<\/p>\n
To become a recognized champion, each canine needs 15 points, including two from major wins worth 3-5 points and from at least three different judges. Points are awarded depending on the number of entries of the breed in a show.<\/p>\n
Grand champions must have earned 25 points under four different judges. They also need three major wins and to have defeated another Champion of Record in three competitive shows.<\/p>\n
